Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 in the Round of 32 at SoFi Stadium on Sunday. Stephen Eustaquio scored in the second minute of stoppage time to send Canada into the Round of 16 for the first time in its history.
Both teams entered the match with strong defensive setups. Canada controlled much of the possession but struggled to break through South Africa’s organized backline.
South African players repelled several Canadian attacks in the first half. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made key saves to keep the score level at halftime.
The game remained scoreless until deep into added time. Stephen Eustaquio, the LAFC midfielder, received the ball near the edge of the penalty area and struck an exquisite shot past Williams.
The goal came after sustained Canadian pressure in the second half. Teammates rushed to celebrate with Eustaquio as fans erupted in the stands.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch highlighted the players’ determination after the match. “The team showed great character throughout the 90-plus minutes,” Marsch said. “We kept pushing and deserved the breakthrough.”
South Africa coach Hugo Broos expressed disappointment but commended his squad’s effort. “We defended well but Canada found a way in the end,” Broos stated.
The narrow victory eliminated South Africa from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Canada now prepares for a Round of 16 clash against either Morocco or the Netherlands. The result marks a milestone for the co-host nation, which advanced beyond the group stage for the first time.
