The Democratic Republic of Congo secured a historic result on Wednesday as they earned their first ever point at a FIFA World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Portugal.
DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre deployed a compact defensive setup that frustrated the favored Portuguese side throughout the match. Portugal dominated possession but struggled to break down the Leopards’ organized defense.
Portugal took the lead in the sixth minute. João Neves rose to head home a cross and give his team an early advantage. Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s captain and all-time leading scorer, started the match but found limited opportunities as DR Congo restricted space effectively.
The Portuguese side, ranked among the tournament favorites, pressed for a second goal. However, DR Congo maintained their shape and limited Ronaldo to minimal impact, with reports noting he had around 25 touches and no shots on target.
DR Congo responded strongly. In the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time, Yoane Wissa powered a brilliant header past the Portuguese goalkeeper. Arthur Masuaku provided the assist on the cross.
Wissa’s strike marked DR Congo’s first-ever goal at the World Cup. It also delivered their first point in the competition, ending a long wait since their previous appearance 52 years ago.
In the second half, Portugal continued to push forward but failed to convert chances. DR Congo defender Chancel Mbemba and his teammates anchored a stubborn back line. They absorbed pressure and launched occasional counters, showcasing discipline and resolve.
Coach Desabre praised his players’ commitment after the match. “We came here to compete,” he stated, highlighting the team’s preparation and unity.
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez expressed disappointment with the outcome but acknowledged DR Congo’s performance. The result leaves Group K wide open ahead of upcoming fixtures against Uzbekistan and Colombia.
DR Congo’s players celebrated the draw with visible emotion. Fans in Kinshasa and at the stadium erupted in joy as the final whistle confirmed the historic achievement.
The Leopards demonstrated that tactical organization and fighting spirit can challenge even established powerhouses on the world stage. Portugal will seek improvements as the group stage progresses.
