Austrian Man Jailed 15 Years Over Plot to Attack Taylor Swift Concert in Vienna

An Austrian court sentenced a 21-year-old man to 15 years in prison. The man, identified only as Beran A, planned a terrorist attack on Taylor Swift’s concert in Vienna in 2024.

The state court in Wiener Neustadt found Beran A guilty on Thursday. Judges convicted him of multiple terrorism related offenses. Beran A admitted to the charges during the trial. He became radicalized and swore allegiance to the Islamic State group.

Prosecutors stated that Beran A planned to attack fans outside the Ernst Happel Stadium. He attempted to buy weapons, including a machine gun and hand grenade. Moreover he followed instructions from an Islamic State video to produce the explosive TATP.

Authorities arrested Beran A on August 7, 2024. The arrest came one day before the first of three scheduled concerts. Transitioning from the initial plans, officials canceled all shows to protect the public. The decision affected around 200,000 fans.

Beran A also faced charges for planning attacks in other locations, including Mecca, Dubai, and Istanbul. He pleaded guilty to these offenses as well.

The court tried Beran A alongside another 21-year-old man named Arda K from Slovakia. Arda K stood accused of involvement in the same cell. The pair operated with jihadist motives.

In court, Beran A expressed remorse for his actions. He said he was sorry for the pain caused to fans and the community. However the judge imposed the 15-year sentence, which fell short of the maximum 20 years.

Austrian authorities praised intelligence agencies for foiling the plot. They highlighted quick action that prevented potential mass casualties. The case underscored ongoing concerns over radicalization and terrorism threats in Europe.
