Activist Aisha Yesufu withdrew from the 2027 Federal Capital Territory senatorial race. She made the decision after her party canceled primaries for the seat.
Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu, a key ally of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, dropped her ambition. She joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress in early May 2026 and declared her intention to contest the FCT Senate seat. However the party later decided against holding primaries for the position.
In a statement on Friday, Aisha Yesufu confirmed the development. She said, “Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives.”
The cancellation effectively ended her brief campaign. Transitioning from her earlier plans, Aisha Yesufu urged supporters to remain calm. She called on them to focus on the broader presidential race and other party activities.
Aisha Yesufu had intensified consultations across the six area councils of the FCT. She promised to push for better infrastructure, security, and health services if elected. Moreover she positioned her bid as an extension of her activism into politics.
Aisha Yesufu resigned from the African Democratic Congress before joining the NDC. She aimed to bring advocacy experience to the Senate. However the party’s internal decision shifted the dynamics.
Aisha Yesufu pledged to continue her engagement with FCT residents. She committed to visiting communities and supporting the party’s candidates in other races. The withdrawal highlighted challenges aspirants face within emerging political platforms ahead of the 2027 elections.
