Abia State Governor Alex Otti commissioned the new Umuahia Central Bus Terminal on Wednesday. He renamed the facility after Professor Nnenna Nnannaya-Oti, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri.
Otti performed the inauguration at the terminal located at Ishi Gate. The modern multimodal transport hub provides space for over 340 buses. It features air-conditioned lounges, solar power systems, and accessibility ramps for persons with disabilities.
Governor Alex Otti addressed the gathering during the event. He named the terminal after Professor Nnenna Nnannaya-Oti for her role as the Independent National Electoral Commission returning officer in the 2023 Abia governorship election.
“This terminal has been named after Professor Nnenna Nnannaya-Oti, the courageous INEC returning officer who demonstrated unflinching integrity in the discharge of her duties during a high-stakes election assignment here in Abia,” Otti said.
Professor Nnenna Nnannaya-Oti served as the first female Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri. She announced Otti as the winner of the election despite reported pressures. She insisted that the actual votes cast must reflect in the official results.
The project forms part of broader efforts to improve transportation in Abia State. Authorities also unveiled new roads on the same day. Electric buses now operate routes from Umuahia to Aba and Ohafia at subsidised fares.
Professor Nnenna Nnannaya-Oti expressed appreciation for the honour. She highlighted her commitment to duty during the election collation process.
The renaming received positive reactions from residents who viewed it as recognition of courage and service to democracy. The Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal began full operations immediately after the commissioning.
