Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu congratulated his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, on Friday after he emerged as the All Progressives Congress candidate for the 2027 governorship election. Dr. Obafemi Hamzat won the party’s direct primary held on Thursday across the state.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu issued the message through a statement. He said, “Congratulations to my brother and Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat on emerging as the APC Lagos Governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.”
Dr. Obafemi Hamzat polled 657,917 votes in the primary. He defeated his only rival, who scored just one vote. Another aspirant withdrew before voting started. The returning officer, retired General Jonathan Temlong, declared Dr. Obafemi Hamzat the winner at the collation centre in Ikeja.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu added more praise in his statement. He said, “On behalf of my family, I congratulate Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat on his emergence as the standard bearer of our great party, the All Progressives Congress, in next year’s gubernatorial election in Lagos.”
The governor described the process as a demonstration of party unity. He noted that he and Dr. Obafemi Hamzat had worked together for years. Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence that Lagos would reach greater heights under the leadership of his deputy.
Dr. Obafemi Hamzat accepted the ticket with thanks to party leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He pledged to build on the progress made in the state. The development sets the stage for the 2027 election as the APC moves forward with its candidate.
