BREAKING: Chelsea Legend Azpilicueta Announces Retirement From Football

Spanish defender César Azpilicueta announced his retirement from professional football on Friday. The 36-year-old confirmed that the current season with Sevilla would mark the end of his playing days.

César Azpilicueta made the announcement through a heartfelt statement on social media. He wrote, “Dear football, today I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years living my dream, I feel it is time to start a new chapter in my life.”

César Azpilicueta joined Chelsea from Marseille in 2012. He went on to make 508 appearances for the club over 11 years and served as captain. The defender played a key role in major successes.

Chelsea won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League and several other trophies during his time at Stamford Bridge.

After he left Chelsea in 2023, César Azpilicueta moved to Atlético Madrid on a free transfer. He spent two seasons there before he joined Sevilla in 2025. He accumulated more than 800 career appearances across all clubs and won 12 major trophies in total.

César Azpilicueta represented Spain at several major tournaments. He earned dozens of caps for his country, although he had not featured for the national team since 2023.

Fans and former clubs praised the defender for his leadership, versatility and professionalism. Chelsea described him as a club legend who left an everlasting mark. The player known affectionately as “Dave” earned respect for his consistency and commitment throughout his career.
