Aston Villa secured their first major European trophy in more than four decades after they beat SC Freiburg 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday. The English club lifted the trophy at Beşiktaş Park in Istanbul.
Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans opened the scoring with a crisp volley in the first half. The Belgian international struck from distance to give his team the lead against a Freiburg side that created early chances but failed to convert them.
Emiliano Buendia doubled the advantage later with a fine curler. The Argentine forward guided the ball into the net to put Villa firmly in command as they controlled possession and limited Freiburg’s attacks.
Morgan Rogers added the third goal to complete the rout. The forward poked the ball home at the near post in the second half and ensured there was no way back for the German opponents.
SC Freiburg, who reached their first major European final, struggled to match Villa’s intensity throughout the match. The Bundesliga team showed moments of promise but could not break down a solid Villa defence.
Head coach Unai Emery guided Aston Villa to European success in his trademark style. The Spaniard, who has won multiple Europa League titles before, led his players to a convincing performance on the big stage. Villa also qualified for the Champions League through their Premier League position earlier in the season.
Villa fans celebrated wildly both in Istanbul and back home in Birmingham as the final whistle confirmed the historic win. The victory marked Aston Villa’s first European trophy since their 1982 European Cup triumph.
