Manchester City appointed Enzo Maresca as its new manager. The club confirmed the move after Pep Guardiola decided to leave at the end of the 2025-26 season.
Pep Guardiola joined Manchester City in 2016. He delivered 20 major trophies during his decade at the club. These included six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League. City finished third in the league this season.
Sources close to the club said speculation about his future grew after that result. Guardiola informed the club of his decision to depart following the final Premier League match.
Enzo Maresca worked as Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City. He contributed to the 2023 treble winning campaign. Maresca later managed Leicester City and Chelsea. He left Chelsea in January 2026.
Reports indicated City held positive talks with him in recent weeks. Fabrizio Romano, a football journalist, reported that Maresca reached an agreement in principle with the club for a two-year deal with an option for a third year.
Hugo Viana, Manchester City’s director of football, led the succession process. Club officials viewed Maresca as the leading candidate because of his deep knowledge of Guardiola’s methods.
Maresca once said he felt ready for big challenges after his time at City. He returns to the Etihad Stadium with a clear plan to maintain the team’s possession based style.
Manchester City supporters reflected on Guardiola’s transformative impact. Many expressed confidence in Maresca’s ability to continue the success. Maresca will officially begin his role on June 1, 2026. The appointment marks the start of a new phase for the Premier League club.
