Ghana Sacks Head Coach Otto Addo Just 10 Weeks Before World Cup

The Ghana Football Association dismissed head coach Otto Addo on Tuesday, just over 70 days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Officials announced the decision hours after Ghana lost 2-1 to Germany in a friendly match in Stuttgart.

The Ghana Football Association stated it parted ways with Otto Addo effective immediately. “The association wishes to thank him sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours,” the statement read.

Ghana suffered a 5-1 defeat to Austria days earlier. These back-to-back friendly losses added to a poor run of form that included only two wins in the last 12 matches. The Ghana Football Association believed it had given Otto Addo every chance, yet the team lost the dressing room, sources close to the situation indicated.

Otto Addo, 50, previously guided the Black Stars to World Cup qualification. Despite this success, recent results raised concerns among officials and fans about preparations for the tournament.

Football analysts noted the decision plunged the Black Stars into uncertainty. The association promised to announce a new technical direction shortly.

Otto Addo took charge during a transitional period for Ghana. He helped secure qualification, yet the string of defeats shifted momentum against him. The Ghana Football Association thanked him for his service before the abrupt end to his tenure.

The Black Stars now search for stability as they prepare for the global stage. Officials must act quickly to appoint a replacement and restore confidence within the squad.
