Welbeck Brace Fires Brighton to 2-1 Victory, Hurting Liverpool’s Top-Five Push

Brighton striker Danny Welbeck scored twice to secure a 2-1 victory for his team against Liverpool on March 21 2026. The result at the Amex Stadium left the visitors struggling in their push for a top-five finish.

Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike came off injured after a collision with Brighton midfielder James Milner shortly after kick-off. The setback forced an early substitution and disrupted the visitors’ rhythm. Brighton took advantage of the chaos.

Welbeck opened the scoring in the 14th minute. He outjumped Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate to head home a deep cross from Diego Gomez. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili could not stop the powerful effort. Brighton led 1-0.

Liverpool responded quickly. In the 30th minute defender Milos Kerkez pounced on a weak header from Brighton captain Lewis Dunk. Kerkez lofted the ball over goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to make it 1-1. The equaliser lifted the visitors.

After the interval Welbeck struck again in the 56th minute. He tapped the ball home from close range after another cross into the box. Officials checked the tight offside call but awarded the goal. Brighton regained the lead at 2-1.

Liverpool pressed hard in the final stages but failed to equalise. Verbruggen produced several important saves while Mamardashvili kept his team in the game earlier. A late tangle between Konate and Welbeck brought no penalty.

The loss left Liverpool in fifth place with the gap to the teams above them set to widen. Brighton moved up to eighth position six points behind their opponents. Welbeck finished with 12 league goals as the top-scoring Englishman this season.
