Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle released the 23-man squad list on March 18. He omitted striker Victor Osimhen from the team for the March international break.
Osimhen plays club football for Galatasaray. The coach left him out along with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and defender Ola Aina. Officials gave no explanation for the striker’s absence.
However, three players received their first invitations. Defender Emmanuel Fernandez joined from Rangers. Winger Philip Otele came from Hamburg. Forward Collins Yira Sor arrived from Genk. These additions gave the squad fresh options.
Meanwhile Nigeria prepared to face Iran on March 27 in Antalya, Turkey. The team then took on Jordan on March 31 in the same venue. The matches formed part of a four-nations tournament.
Additionally, the squad included established players. Forward Ademola Lookman led the attack. Defender Calvin Bassey anchored the back line. Midfielders Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka and Wilfred Ndidi featured in the group.
The squad announcement allowed Chelle to test depth. New faces gained a chance to impress. Nigeria continued preparations under the coach without Osimhen in the lineup.
