Coroner’s Inquest into Chimamanda Adichie Son’s Death Begins April 14

The Lagos State coroner launched an inquest on April 14 into the death of the teenage son of celebrated Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The investigation opened amid serious allegations of medical negligence against two private hospitals in Lagos. The boy died in June 2024 at the age of 15 after seeking treatment for an undisclosed illness. His death sparked widespread public concern about healthcare standards in Nigeria’s private medical sector.

Family representatives accused the hospitals of failing to provide adequate care during the boy’s treatment. According to statements filed with the coroner, medical staff allegedly delayed critical interventions and misdiagnosed his condition. Furthermore, the family claimed that communication between hospital departments broke down at crucial moments. The two facilities involved have not publicly commented on the specific allegations pending the legal proceedings.

Coroner Court officials confirmed that the inquest would examine the circumstances surrounding the death and determine whether negligence contributed to the outcome. State counsel presented preliminary evidence on the opening day. Additionally, the court summoned medical records from both hospitals and scheduled testimony from attending physicians.

“The purpose of this inquest is to establish the facts and recommend measures to prevent similar tragedies,” the presiding coroner stated in his opening remarks.

Adichie attended the proceedings accompanied by legal representatives. She maintained a composed demeanor throughout the initial session. Her lawyers indicated that the family pursued the inquest to ensure transparency rather than financial compensation.

“We want answers,” a family spokesperson told reporters outside the courthouse. “No parent should endure what Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has endured.”
